The SHINE Initiative will be a leader in the effort to recognize mental illness in children and young adults as a mainstream health issue.
In pursuit of this mission, the SHINE Initiative develops funding and strategic alliances to improve public awareness and understanding of mental health issues, research and treatment.
The SHINE Initiative is a social enterprise. All monies raised are directly focused into the following “three pillars” of our work:
Biological research that focuses on the discovery of the root causes of major mental illnesses such as bi-polar disorder, manic-depressive disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, etc. will be considered for funding. “Finding the cause and the cure” is the cornerstone of our work.
Programs will be designed that give voice to public understanding and awareness and ultimately work to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness. Professional seminars and school-wide forums will also be developed.
Innovative mental health programs that demonstrate replicable potential and financial sustainability will be considered for funding.
Since 2004 the SHINE Initiative has raised and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in mental health awareness and education, and research. We’ve funded and promoted Mental Health First Aid for educators and emergency responders. We’ve collaborated with community partners to host mental health conferences and summits, including the following:
- May 2012 at Worcester State University
- October 2012 at Mount Wachusett Community College
- March 2013 at the DCU Center, in partnership with the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League
- March 2013, Be Mentally Lecture at the UMass Memorial Medical School
- April 2013, focus group at the College of the Holy Cross
- May 2013 at Clark University, in partnership with Common Pathways
- October 2013, Be Mentally Lecture at the UMass Memorial Medical School.
